Proportion
Two quantities are in proportion when one is always a fixed multiple of the other (or of its square, its root or its reciprocal). Write the link as an equation with a constant k, find k from one known pair, and you can predict any other value. The whole chapter is Extended content.
Learning objectives
- Recognise direct proportion, y ∝ x, and write it as y = kx.
- Know that k is the constant of proportionality and the gradient of the graph.
- Work with proportion to a power or root: y ∝ x², y ∝ x³, y ∝ √x.
- Work with inverse proportion: y ∝ , y ∝ .
- Find k from one pair of values, then find unknown values.
- Turn word problems into proportion equations.
Book exercises: 16.1, 16.2 and 16.3, and Student assessments 1 and 2 (pp. 166–171).
Direct proportion Extended
🔑 Key ideas
- y ∝ x means “y is directly proportional to x”.
- It becomes an equation with a constant: y = kx.
- k is the constant of proportionality (or constant of variation).
- Divide any y by its x and you always get k: = k.
- The graph of y against x is a straight line through the origin with gradient k.
| x | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 10 | k = y ÷ x |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| y = 2x | 0 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 10 | 20 | 2 |
| y = 3x | 0 | 3 | 6 | 9 | 15 | 30 | 3 |
| y = 2.5x | 0 | 2.5 | 5 | 7.5 | 12.5 | 25 | 2.5 |
📘 Example 1 (book) · y ∝ x. If y = 7 when x = 2, find y when x = 5
- Write the proportion as an equation: y = kx.
- Substitute the known pair: 7 = k × 2.
- Solve for k: k = 7 ÷ 2 = 3.5, so y = 3.5x.
- Use x = 5: y = 3.5 × 5 = 17.5.
- Check: 17.5 ÷ 5 = 3.5 = 7 ÷ 2. ✔
📘 Example 2 · The cost C of fuel is proportional to the litres L bought. 20 litres cost $30. How many litres can you buy for $60?
- C ∝ L, so C = kL.
- Substitute: 30 = k × 20, so k = 30 ÷ 20 = 1.5 (the price per litre).
- Use C = 60: 60 = 1.5L.
- Divide: L = 60 ÷ 1.5 = 40 litres.
- Check: double the money buys double the fuel (20 → 40). ✔
✏️ Try it

- y ∝ x and y = 9 when x = 6. Find y when x = 10.

Proportion to powers and roots Extended
🔑 Key ideas
- y can be proportional to a power of x: y ∝ xⁿ (n > 0) gives y = kxⁿ.
- Common ones: y ∝ x² (y = kx²), y ∝ x³ (y = kx³), y ∝ √x (y = k√x, since √x = x1/2).
- The graph of y against x is now a curve.
- Plot y against the power instead (x², x³ or √x) and it becomes a straight line through the origin.
| x | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| y = 2x² | 2 | 8 | 18 | 32 | 50 |
| y = ½x³ | ½ | 4 | 13½ | 32 | 62½ |
| y = √x | 1 | √2 | √3 | 2 | √5 |
What happens to y when x doubles?
| Proportion | Equation | x doubles, so y is… |
|---|---|---|
| y ∝ x | y = kx | × 2 |
| y ∝ x² | y = kx² | × 4 |
| y ∝ x³ | y = kx³ | × 8 |
| y ∝ √x | y = k√x | × √2 (about 1.41) |
| y ∝ 1/x | y = k/x | ÷ 2 |
| y ∝ 1/x² | y = k/x² | ÷ 4 |
📘 Example 3 · y ∝ x² and y = 20 when x = 2. Find y when x = 6, and x when y = 125
- Write the equation: y = kx².
- Substitute: 20 = k × 2² = 4k.
- Solve: k = 20 ÷ 4 = 5, so y = 5x².
- x = 6: y = 5 × 6² = 5 × 36 = 180.
- y = 125: 125 = 5x², so x² = 25.
- Square root: x = 5 (or −5 if x can be negative).
📘 Example 4 · y ∝ √x and y = 6 when x = 9. Find y when x = 49
- Write the equation: y = k√x.
- Substitute: 6 = k × √9 = 3k.
- Solve: k = 2, so y = 2√x.
- x = 49: y = 2 × √49 = 2 × 7 = 14.
📘 Example 5 · y ∝ x³ and y = 16 when x = 2. Find y when x = 3
- y = kx³, so 16 = k × 2³ = 8k.
- k = 16 ÷ 8 = 2, so y = 2x³.
- x = 3: y = 2 × 27 = 54.
✏️ Try it
- y ∝ x² and y = 27 when x = 3. Find y when x = 5.
- y ∝ √x and y = 15 when x = 25. Find x when y = 12.

Answers
1. k = 3, y = 75 · 2. k = 3, √x = 4, x = 16 · 3. 3³ = 27
Inverse proportion Extended

- As x goes up, y goes down. Double x and y halves.
- Multiply any pair together and you always get k: xy = k.
- The same idea works with powers: y ∝ gives y = , y ∝ gives y = .
- The graph of y against is a straight line through the origin.
📘 Example 6 (book) · y ∝ . If y = 5 when x = 3, find y when x = 30
- Write the equation: y = .
- Substitute: 5 = .
- Multiply both sides by 3: k = 15, so y = .
- x = 30: y = = 0.5.
- Check: 3 × 5 = 15 and 30 × 0.5 = 15. ✔
📘 Example 7 · y ∝ and y = 5 when x = 2. Find y when x = 4, and x when y = 0.8
- Write the equation: y = .
- Substitute: 5 = , so k = 20.
- x = 4: y = = 1.25.
- y = 0.8: 0.8 = , so x² = 20 ÷ 0.8 = 25.
- Square root: x = 5 (or −5).

Word problems Extended
The hard part of a word problem is the first step: turning the sentence into symbols. After that it is the four-step method.
📘 Example 9 · A car's stopping distance d m is proportional to the square of its speed v km/h. At 40 km/h, d = 20 m
(a) Find d at 80 km/h. (b) Find v when d = 45 m.
- Write ∝ and add k: d ∝ v², so d = kv².
- Find k: 20 = k × 40² = 1600k, so k = 20 ÷ 1600 = 0.0125.
- (a) v = 80: d = 0.0125 × 80² = 0.0125 × 6400 = 80 m.
- Check (a): speed doubled, so distance × 4: 20 × 4 = 80. ✔
- (b) 45 = 0.0125v², so v² = 45 ÷ 0.0125 = 3600.
- Square root (speed is positive): v = 60 km/h.

Chapter summary
- y ∝ x means y = kx: a straight line through the origin with gradient k.
- y ∝ xⁿ means y = kxⁿ (x², x³, √x). Plot y against xⁿ to get a straight line.
- y ∝ 1/x means y = k/x: as x goes up, y goes down, and xy = k.
- Four steps: write ∝, add k, find k from a known pair, then predict.
- Doubling x: y × 2 (x), × 4 (x²), × 8 (x³), ÷ 2 (1/x), ÷ 4 (1/x²).
- When you square-root to find x, there may be two answers (±). Use the positive one for lengths, times and speeds.
